"An Unyielding Odyssey: Lai Jianping's Epic Quest to Resurrect the Enchanting Legacy of Longquan Official Kiln"

I am neither wealthy nor exceptionally talented. The only thing I can proudly proclaim before everyone is that I am an "official." However, this "official" is related to the Imperial Royal Porcelain Official Kiln. This "official" has precipitated for a thousand years, once submerged by the dust of history. It is the arrangement of fate, the favor of heaven, and also my profound blessing to become the leader of this “官(official).”

To trace the origins, let's start with my ancestors. According to historical records, my ancestors engaged in the production of celadon in the year 1810, a tradition that has continued for more than two hundred years. Throughout these centuries, nine generations of my family have been dedicated solely to celadon, unwavering in our commitment. Growing up in the world of celadon since childhood, I carry the blood of celadon people, fostering a special connection with celadon. My life trajectory, dreams, and pursuits are destined to be intertwined with celadon. With the initial intention of bringing the cultural treasure of celadon, hidden in the depths, to the metropolis and fulfilling the original aspiration of "swallows flying into ordinary people's homes in front of the Wang and Xie halls of old," I arrived in Hangzhou in 1993.
In the days of striving and struggling in Hangzhou, influenced and inspired by friends, I began to study the historical and cultural knowledge of ceramics through supplementary classes. Through research and learning, my horizons expanded. It turns out that during the Southern Song Dynasty, the thick glaze celadon produced in Longquan was the porcelain used by the Southern Song court, and Longquan, Dazhuang, and other places were the direct locations where the Southern Song court commissioned the firing of porcelain. The Southern Song court even sent officials to Longquan to supervise the production of court porcelain, and this is what is known as the Longquan Official Kiln.

However, these historical facts, this glorious page, were unexpectedly submerged in the long river of history, unknown to anyone. Upon making this significant discovery, amidst the excitement, I asked myself if, as a descendant of Longquan celadon, I should shoulder the mission and responsibility of rescuing and excavating the "Longquan Official Kiln." After consulting and listening to the opinions and suggestions of friends and benefactors, I immediately took action and registered the Longquan City Official Kiln Ceramic Industry Co., Ltd. From then on, I officially embarked on the first step of the arduous journey to rescue, excavate, and build the "Longquan Official Kiln," beginning the difficult and rugged journey.
Removing the dust of history to let the "Longquan Official Kiln" see the light of day is by no means an easy task. At that time, the sale of celadon in the Hangzhou market was already scarce. "Longquan Official Kiln" was like an imported product, completely unknown, with insufficient income to cover expenses. Economic and spiritual pressures forced me into a difficult situation, and after various struggles, I depleted all my savings, making progress extremely challenging. At the lowest point, I had to rely on loans and my spouse selling breakfast to sustain our livelihood, while I rode my bicycle around shouting about the Longquan Official Kiln.
A man sheds no tears lightly, and for me, a former soldier, all the hardships in life were insignificant.

What perplexed me the most was not only fighting alone without support, but also facing rejection and criticism from some people. I could only survive in this squeeze and seek development. In the midst of all this, I kept in mind Lu Xun's words: "Walk your own path and let others talk." At the same time, I reminded myself, "To become a tall tree, do not contend with grass." With an initial heart and a belief, I persevered on this difficult and narrow path.

For decades, I, like Forrest Gump in this industry, dedicated all my efforts to the "official" of the Longquan Official Kiln. Despite numerous wounds, I continued to forge ahead, and the hardships were indescribable.

Fortunately, the hard work and dedication did not go in vain. Thanks to the care and strong support of various heroes and benefactors, the "Longquan Official Kiln" and the engraved "official" word gained a certain influence in society, and more mentors and friends gathered. As time passed, with the assistance of benefactors, I also undertook the responsibility of designing and producing diplomatic gifts. In 1996, the work was presented to the President of Germany, Roman Herzog. By 2002, the relevant departments of the Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government specifically issued a document stating that the "Longquan Official Kiln" was a representative cultural gift for the Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government's foreign exchanges, permanently collected by the National Museum. Subsequently, I started accepting diplomatic gift tasks from some national ministries... In 2006, the "official" of the "Longquan Official Kiln" was recognized by the Ministry of Commerce as a "Chinese Time-Honored Brand," becoming the first honor obtained in the Chinese ceramic industry!

Due to my persistent efforts and unwavering pursuit of my Official Kiln dream, my story was extensively published in the overseas edition of the People's Daily with the title "Celadon Family Official Kiln Dream."

Fortune smiled upon me, and during the G20 Hangzhou Summit and the "Belt and Road" Beijing Summit, several works were personally selected by national leaders as state gifts. During the conference, dozens of foreign heads of state and world organization leaders were presented with these works, impressing everyone. These works were later permanently collected by the National Museum.

This "official" is a national treasure, and both national leaders and many social elites have praised and encouraged me to continue moving forward! Due to the "official," I received the Jubilee Gift and was awarded the Royal Order by the Prince of Thailand.

Every past experience becomes a prologue. I have completed only the first step of the long march. Currently, only a few people know about Longquan Official Kiln, and some high-end markets in the ceramic field are monopolized by foreign brands. Surprisingly, in the world's top ten ceramic brands, there is no place for China, a country synonymous with porcelain. As a ceramic artist, I feel a sense of guilt.
The term "Official Kiln," whether in the past, present, or future, symbolizes the pinnacle of top-quality ceramics. A search on the internet reveals that there are some enterprises named Official Kiln, indicating a clear understanding of the historical status and value of the Official Kiln in the ceramics industry. This is also the positioning of enterprises for development, and I am pleased with the decisions made by fellow industry leaders. As Chinese ceramic artists, we should take the Official Kiln as the goal and benchmark for brand management. Only in this way can Chinese ceramics have a future and hope. In brand management, we should learn from the liquor industry's “Maotai” and “Wuliangye”! Because Wuliangye never denigrates Maotai, and Maotai never belittles Wuliangye, they only emphasize their respective characteristics and differences. As a result, both have become globally renowned high-end liquor brands.
Today, I am no longer young, but I am still pursuing my dreams. To showcase the oldest "official" kiln culture in history to the world, the government has provided us with an ancient garden in the area at the foot of Mount Yu Huang, the site of the ancient palace of the Southern Song Dynasty in Hangzhou. It serves as a window to display the historical "official" kiln culture and acts as the forefront outpost for my continued long march. I sincerely welcome friends to visit and provide guidance!
Dear readers and friends, after reading my lengthy self-narrative above, you must have one question for me: What is the reason for choosing contemporary Longquan Official Kiln works? I can only tell you that presenting our works as gifts to others may enhance the recipient's sense of value because the base bears the word "official," which, besides being traceable, also carries the meaning of heavenly blessing. If you place it as a decoration at home, you can talk to guests about the past, present, and future of the Official Kiln. In the past, it served the royal court; today, it is a diplomatic gift for major national events and is permanently collected by the National Museum. As for tomorrow and its value, time will prove everything!
